History of the site

Douglas-fir silviculture plot nets were installed in 1990 in the public forest “Aitzarte”, in Ataun by Diputación Foral of Gipuzkoa. After five mensurations (1990, 1997, 1998, 2005 and 2011), the best adaptation of several types of Douglas-fir silviculture to the climate of the mounts from Gipuzkoa is proved. The first step was the data collection of the same trees along the years. A database was created with these data. During the Reinfforce project, all the trees were measured by diameter and total height: 450 trees. All the numeric, metallic brands were renewed in each tree. In each of these 8 plots, 10 mean trees were selected to measure its wood quality: first, by core extraction and further laboratory measure by X-ray: ring width and density and by the Hitman ST300 and the Fakopp tools (two measures in each selected tree in its basal log) An analysis with all these data is expected along the final year of the project. Relationships between thinning regime, growth and climatic damages will be studied.
