In the framework of REINFFORCE 2, INRAE teams designed a new generation of wireless microdendrometers to monitor 100 trees on 7 REINFFORCE1 arboreta. Collecting high-frequency data for many years, these microdendrometers will allow REINFFORCE staff to compare within and between species reactions to climate as weather data are also available on these sites. The first complete vegetation period to be monitored will be the year 2027.
Software for servers and phones as well as big data analysis scripts will also be developed and improved within the REINFFORCE2 period to deliver a fully operational system by the end of 2027.
The main species that will be intensively monitored are species alive from the south of France to the south of Portugal : Pinus brutia (ELDA), Pinus pinea (CAST, FRAN, ITAL), Pinus ponderosa (MEXI), Pinus pinaster (LACO,LAND, TAMJ), Quercus ilex (CROA, EXTR), Quercus robur (PAGO), Quercus shumardii (TEXA), Quercus suber (VILL), Eucalyptus gundal, Betula pendula.
This innovative activity will open avenues for further deployment of intensive monitoring tools in the scientific community, lead to promising scientific papers and provide reliable information to foresters.
